About Co-creation with the Global South

This project focuses on informing the outcome of activities relating to issues such as SDGs and international cooperation that are being developed in the global south, Africa, specifically in Tanzania and Ghana, to provide opportunities for cultural understanding/interexchange and international cooperation. Activities in the following three areas are planned as projects, starting from 2022:
“Indigenous Knowledge, Food and Health”
“Japan’s International Cooperation”
“Tanzania Picture Book Project”

Project:
“Indigenous Knowledge, Food and Health”

Outline

In this project, we investigate the impact of diverse indigenous knowledges (e.g. wild food, herbs and traditional food) and health, taking special account of the Sustainable Development Goals 2: Zero Hunger, and 3: Good Health and Well-Being. The research will be conducted through the collaboration of different fields such as regional studies, nutritious science, maternal and child health, art, psychology, history of thoughts, botany and soil science. While the research is centered in Tanzania, we also exchange information about experiences in other African and Asian nations.

Project:
“Japan’s International Cooperation”

Outline

Under the leadership of faculties and staffs of School of International Studies and in collaboration with Afro-Asian Institute of Japan and off-campus regional researchers and experts, we have published the three-volume series titled Japan’s International Cooperation covering Asia, Middle East/Africa, and Central/South America. These volumes describe the actual situations and case studies of Japan’s involvement in the international cooperation based on Japan’s history and political/economic situation in the area of International Cooperation in each nation. We regularly hold CMPS symposiums related to this project.

Project:
“Tanzania Picture Book Project”

Outline

We launched a crowdfunding with the students in April of 2021 that aimed to create a picture book based on international cooperation experiences in Tanzania and send 100 copies of them to children in Tanzania. With support from 137 people through the crowdfunding website READYFOR, we are now able to send 217 copies to Tanzania after achieving our goal on May 31, 2021, and 5 copies through Book for Two. Subsequently, the picture book was published from a publishing company in December, 2021.

We have started distributing copies to elementary schools and children in Tanzania. We have also organized book-reading sessions for children (mainly in Tochigi).
