About Society for the Study of Diverse Learning

There are many people in today’s Japan who seek diverse learning opportunities, including those who did not complete compulsory education (approx. 900,000), those who received a junior high diploma “as a formality” despite not having attended classes (approx. 1 million), foreigners who are over school age and school-age children who do not attend school for various reasons. Founded in 2022, the Society for the Study of Diverse Learning aims to conduct research on, and to contribute to the promotion of, diverse learning opportunities for these people.

In collaboration with the organization advocating the creation of Night Junior High Schools in Tochigi Prefecture, we organize a series of workshops in which interested groups and individuals present case studies on night schools that have been implemented in various regions, and exchange information and opinions on related issues. In addition, “Classroom for Diverse Learning” meets regularly to support learners of various ages and nationalities, with the aim of providing them with an open space where “anyone can participate at any moment, and continue as long as (s)he wants to.”
