Project:UU-TEA
(Utsunomiya University Tea Estate Assistance)
About UU-TEA
Ever since Utsunomiya City ranked No. 1 in Japan in black tea consumption per household in the period of 2008-09 (according to the family budget survey by Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications), it has kept its status as one of the top tea-consuming cities in Japan. This fact, along with the fact that 70 % of tea distributed in Japan are Ceylon tea from Sri Lanka, has created special connection between our city and Sri Lanka.
UU-TEA is a student group in Utsunomiya University formed in February 2018, supporting schoolchildren through after-school activities and interactions with youths living in the tea plantation estates of the Upcountry Sri Lanka. People in Japan and abroad who are interested in tea topics take initiative to promote our activities through SNSs and online networking events, to seek for understanding and support. Our project aims to vitalize after-school activities for children in the tea plantation estates through mutual activities between Utsunomiya University’s students and local people in Sri Lanka as a part of their educational support, while creating the opportunities to encourage the people in the plantation estates to understand the importance of education and consider their future options.
