Project:Research Forum on Fukushima Nuclear Disaster

About Research Forum

In response to the accident of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Utsunomiya University developed support, research and advocacy activities on the initiatives of faculty members of the School of International Studies from April of 2011 to March of 2015, to help the population with greater vulnerability, namely the families with babies and expectant/nursing mothers (Fukushima Support Project for Infants and Expectant/Nursing Mothers). These activities have keenly made us aware that this nuclear disaster was not a local crisis specific to Fukushima Prefecture, but rather represented a structural problem in which particular social groups were burdened with unproportional damages, just like numerous environmental disasters we have seen in the past, home and abroad. We have come to believe that by documenting this event from such a viewpoint, we can make a contribution to local, national and international societies, while fulfilling our “social responsibility” for our future generations.

With this shared perception in mind, “Research Forum on Fukushima Nuclear Disaster” was founded in 2015 by interested parties specializing various fields in order to carry out projects focusing on documenting the nuclear disaster and disseminating the related information. Our aim is to comprehend and document the Fukushima nuclear disaster’s impact on societies from structural viewpoint, and publicize research findings to the wider society. Furthermore, we intend to conduct researches that would lead to actual proposal to the policy issues to respond to the people who are suffering the prolonged damages.
